The Ministry of Labor’s Workforce Development Agency Taoyuan-Hsinchu-Miaoli Regional Branch organized five job fairs in Taiwan in February, with a total of 150 companies offering 6,000 high-quality vacancies. The job fairs, held in Taoyuan, Zhongli, Hsinchu, and Miaoli, attracted a significant number of companies and job seekers. Notably, the Zhubei Civil Sports Center hosted a job fair on February 22, featuring 52 companies offering 2,400 job vacancies, including positions such as electronic engineer, product engineer, safety engineer, and Japanese translator. Some of these roles boasted top salaries of up to NT$70,000. Another job fair with a manufacturing theme took place in Miaoli on the same day, where the highest salary on offer was NT$60,000. Three job fairs were held in Taoyuan, with the highest salary reaching an impressive NT$100,000. The Director General of the agency, Lai Chia-Jen, highlighted the branch’s commitment to addressing job shortages and promoting employment in the post-epidemic period. To encourage employment, the branch also extended employment incentives for project labor shortages.

Taiwan’s gymnastics team coach, Lin Yu-hsin, expressed confidence in the medal prospects of Tang Chia-hung and Olympic silver medalist Lee Chih-kai for the upcoming Paris Summer Olympics. The Taiwanese gymnasts recently visited the Accor Arena, the recognized gymnastics venue, and Lin confirmed that the warm-up venue adheres to global standards. Although no Taiwanese athlete has secured qualification yet, Lin believes that Lee’s performance in pommel horse, Tang’s performance in horizontal bar, and Lin Kuan-yi’s performance in rings could earn them a place in the Olympics and potentially podium finishes. The Accor Arena has hosted various sports events since 1984 and underwent recent renovations. Taiwan plans to send six participants, including Lee Chih-kai, Hsiao Yu-jan, Tang Chia-hung, Hung Yuan-hsi, Lin Kuan-yi, and Tseng Wei-sheng. Lin emphasized the importance of sending strong individual contestants focused on health to secure points. Lee Chih-kai and Tang Chia-hung, both recognized for their skilled performances and reputation, are expected to easily qualify due to their prime age.

Taiwan’s Ministry of Education Sports Administration inspects the athletes’ village at the Paris 2024 Olympics, noting that Taiwan’s delegation has been allocated 39 single rooms for a comfortable rest environment. The Taiwan team has been granted an independent seven-story apartment in the village, which is located in Saint-Denis and features green construction designs. The village uses 100% renewable energy and will transform into a residential community and public activity area after the Olympics. The floors assigned to the Taiwan team are near completion, including 39 single rooms, 33 double rooms, and a two-story sky garden. The beds in the athletes’ dorms use thick cardboard frames and mattresses made from a special fishing net material. The athlete’s village won’t have air conditioning but will use a ＂floor cooling system＂ with cold water pipes installed under wooden floors. Portable air conditioners may be rented to ensure athletes get the best rest at night. Each country’s athletes’ village exterior can be self-designed, and Taiwan plans to discuss with the National Sports Training Center how to decorate and design the exterior to promote recognition of Taiwan and its athletes.

Taiwan People’s Party (TPP) presidential candidate Ko Wen-je vows to promote international sports events, including the 2038 Asian Games and the Olympics, if elected. He recognizes the connection between sports and national power and highlights Taiwan’s top athletes. Ko also proposes career planning guidance and specific examinations for sports personnel, as well as the establishment of a National Sports Development Fund and revision of the Sports Industry Development Act. The Ministry of Labor in Taiwan has reported an increase of 359 employees on unpaid leave since December 18, bringing the total to 9,935. The rise is primarily attributed to the manufacturing sector, which has been affected by a decline in orders. Notably, a sports equipment manufacturing company saw a significant increase of around 170 unpaid leave cases, while the Hsinchu Science Park, known for its semiconductor component manufacturers, reported about 50 workers on unpaid leave. A total of 382 businesses have reduced working hours, impacting 9,935 workers. In the Hsinchu Science Park alone, a semiconductor component manufacturer with a staff of over 600 has implemented reduced shifts for 50 workers. Other industries, such as support services, wholesale, and retail, have experienced relatively minor changes during this period.

The use of ticket-buying bots will be met with up to three years’ imprisonment and/or fines up to NT＄3 million. These measures aim to crack down on the practice of reselling tickets at inflated prices, known locally as ＂huangniu＂ or Yellow Cow. The amended law ensures the anonymity of whistleblowers and potentially rewards them for reporting scalping activities. The updates to the legislation were led by the Legislative Yuan Education and Culture Committee, reflecting the legislature’s commitment to fair access to entertainment and sports for fans in Taiwan.

The revised regulations are tailored for students aged 10 to under 23 years old and aim to provide a more holistic assessment of physical abilities. The reform allows instructors to select testing methods based on environmental conditions, ensuring safety and accuracy. These changes align with international standards and aim to promote robust and health-conscious youth.

The Chinese Taipei Football Association (CTFA) has come under criticism from New Power Party Legislator Claire Wang for failing to make progress in paying salaries to players and facing accusations of gender discrimination. These issues have reportedly persisted since the CTFA’s appointment in March. Wang revealed that players have been owed millions in wages since 2021. The Taiwan Women’s Football Players Association has accused the CTFA of negligence, claiming that the women’s national team’s long-term training plans were abruptly halted. The association has called on the Ministry of Education’s Sports Administration to take responsibility. The Sports Administration has stated that there may be misunderstandings and has requested the CTFA to submit a comprehensive plan for international events such as the 2026 Asian Games. Wang believes that the planned suspension of training is due to the CTFA’s failure to submit a planning document on time, rather than a problem with the National Sports Training Center. Wang has called for a re-evaluation of the CTFA by the Sports Administration to prevent further damage to football development in Taiwan. Under the current chairman, Wang Lin-hsiang, the CTFA is facing a debt problem of over NT＄90 million from previous administrations, including player salaries, referee fees, and vendor costs. Chairman Wang has sent a lawyer’s letter to former chairman Chiou I-jen seeking clarification on these issues.

Super Basketball League (SBL) player Wu Chi-ying has been released on bail after being charged with fraud and match-fixing. The Chinese Taipei Basketball Association has imposed a lifetime ban on Wu, effectively ending his basketball career. Wu was suspected of manipulating and match-fixing games to earn money. He is now facing charges of gambling, fraud, and violation of the Sports Lottery Issuance Act.
